OCC creates Howe chopper

With the roar of the engine and the headlights beaming through a skull, the Orange County Choppers (OCC) unveiled the cave-themed motorcycle developed for Howe Caverns during the company’s 10th anniversary celebration on April 26 at its Newburgh headquarters. The company is featured on American Chopper, a reality TV show that first aired in September 2002 on the Discovery Channel. It now runs on TLC.

Howe Caverns and Wanderlust staff were joined by OCC’s famous family – Paul Teutul Sr., sons Paul Jr. and Mikey – along with hundreds of on-lookers for the unveiling. The custom bike was inspired in part by the new Howe Caverns identity created by Wanderlust in 2008. The cave chopper appeared in the May 28 episode of the Teutul's reality television series, American Choppers. The Teutuls and their crew filmed portions of the show at Howe Caverns during a visit to the cave in April. 

The motorcycle design features the new Howe Caverns logo and message, ‘Go Underground’, created by Wanderlust in 2008. The handle grips were designed to resemble the well-known cave formation, the Chinese Pagoda, and the rear-view mirrors are bat-winged shaped. The bike’s details include elements that look like flowstone and vertebrae to signify the many animals that through millions of years have become part of the limestone cave. There are images of the cave’s discoverer Lester Howe and the message, “In Memory of Benson Guenther” -- a tribute to Howe Caverns’ educator who died in 2008.

“It is truly a work of art,” said Howe Caverns General Manager Robert Holt. “We’re looking forward to having it at the Caverns for our guests to enjoy.”
